課程概述

This seminar encourages students to actively engage in providing solutions to problems/challenges facing their real-world language teaching, including topics related to EFL, ESL, and academic writing. It will first explore the differences/similarities between Cognitive Grammar (e.g., Langacker 2008) and various Constructionist Views (e.g. Goldberg 2010; Croft 2009, etc.), so that students may have a theoretical background to provide critical and consistent feedback to core issues covered, which include but are not limited to 1) how syntax, morphology and lexicon are treated in different lines of thought, and 2) why many of these cognitive views seem to treat “syntax” in a marginal sense (some even avoid this term to a large extent). After the theoretical foundation, PBL will be adopted so that students may look beyond current grammar instructions and provide their own solutions from a cognitive linguist’s perspective.

課程目標
This pragmatics-based course seeks to promote in members not only critical thinking but also creativity and self-directedness with reference to language teaching. Students are expected to explain “conative alternation” to SLA learners from the pragmatic perspective, to explore type of context required for a certain construction, expression or style of writing, as well as to probe into the cause leading to any possible misunderstanding.
課程要求
1. Active class participation
2. Assignments handed in on-time
3. In-class oral reports
4. One 20-page research paper, PBL-based original idea with pedagogical implications
